Around 300 scholarship slots and more than ₱8 million in assistance from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) have been made available to residents of Oriental Mindoro, providing them with opportunities to gain new skills and improve their livelihood prospects.

The scholarship and assistance were highlighted during an awarding ceremony in Roxas town, led by TESDA in partnership with the congressional office of the province. The event brought together local officials and beneficiaries as the government expanded access to technical-vocational education and training programs.

This scholarship rollout is implemented through TESDA’s Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP), which provides free skills training and assessment to qualified beneficiaries. In Oriental Mindoro, six technical-vocational institutions were awarded scholarship slots under the program:

  • Pinamalayan Maritime Foundation and Technological College Inc.

The activity also included the distribution of starter toolkits to qualified beneficiaries of TESDA’s Special Training for Employment Program (STEP), intended to help beneficiaries apply their newly acquired skills and start or strengthen their livelihood activities.

Beneficiaries under this program in Oriental Mindoro receive the following:

  • Starter toolkits, for qualified STEP beneficiaries, to support their transition to employment or self-employment

Starter toolkits distributed included:

  • Electric or cordless drills, for beneficiaries trained in electrical installation and maintenance
  • Electric ovens with rotisserie functions, for trainees in food processing, baking, and food preparation
  • Wheelbarrows, knapsack sprayers, and shovels, for agriculture and farming beneficiaries
  • Weighing scales, knapsack sprayers, and plastic pails, for those trained in organic agriculture and farming

Purpose of the Program

According to Second District Representative Alfonso Umali Jr., the programs are intended to help Mindoreños acquire skills, expand their capabilities, and gain better employment opportunities or establish their own livelihoods.

“Ang mga scholarship na ito ay para sa bawat Mindoreñong gustong matuto, magpalawak ng kakayahan at magkaroon ng mas magandang hanapbuhay o magsimula ng sariling kabuhayan,” Umali said.

(These scholarships are for every Mindoreño who wants to learn, expand their capabilities, and gain a better livelihood or start their own business.)

He also thanked TESDA for its continuing support, saying: “Nagpapasalamat tayo sa TESDA sa kanilang walang sawang pagsuporta at pagbibigay ng mga programang tunay na may pakinabang sa ating mga kababayan.”
